Those of us in any kind of sales or marketing field need to see what is not yet totally visible - viral marketing. By connecting with others in a social capacity when the need for your product or service comes up, it's merely an afterthought as to what provider they will use - the guy down the street they don't know, or you, their "friend" on Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn? The answer couldn't be more obvious.
Through blogging you become known as the expert in your field. Certainly everyone in your business could blog, but very few actually do, instead preferring to react to the business that comes their way rather than creating great educational information for the consumer that will pay them back in spades for a small amount of effort expended up front. But no, we as business people can't do that! We have to always be in front of potential customers, right? Yes, but not in the way most think.
Most offering a product or service believe that they always have to be in front of people in a SELLING capacity, but guess what, the public hates this time. How often do you like to be sold? Contrast that with building rapport gradually through seemingly meaningless conversations online, but not so meaningless to the other part. It's the little things people remember.
So what are you waiting for? Setup your Facebook page, start connecting with those you know, and even more importantly initiate friendships you know do or could exist (suggest friends). This is where business in general is moving, to a relational component - people referring people, not people responding to cold calls. Yuk!
And, take time daily to journal about your business and become knows as the area expert.
Oh, and please, make me YOUR friend!
